ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Brian Leister is a Senior Technical Trainer with Columbus McKinnon Corporation, specializing in entertainment rigging, rope access, and hoist maintenance. He has sixteen years of experience as a rigging professional in the entertainment industry and is ETCP Arena certified rigger and an ETCP recognized trainer, with twelve years of industrial rope access experience as a SPRAT 3 / IRATA 3 Certified Rope Access Technician. The advancement and sharing of knowledge are Brian’s greatest passions.


AGENDA

Our Rigger Boot Camp focuses on the practical skills and tools necessary to work as an entertainment rigger in the live event industry. Each section of this workshop incorporates hands-on activities, to enhance the learning experience.

ESSENTIAL KNOTS, BENDS, & HITCHES

Rope is a rigger’s most versatile and indispensable asset. Like any other tool, it is only as effective as the person using it. This one-day course covers a variety of knots, bends and hitches essential to the day-to-day activities of an entertainment rigger. Students will learn how to build a variety of mechanical advantage systems for safely hauling and lowering loads. They will also learn how to splice eye terminations in double braid and hollow braid ropes.

WIRE ROPE FUNDAMENTALS AND USE

No matter what type of rigging you do, wire rope is a critical component to the overhead attachment and movement of loads.

This training will teach you how to identify and select wire rope, as well as how to make safe and effective terminations and splices in wire rope.

Hands-on activities include crimping, reeving splices, Flemish eye, and use of wire rope clips.

SAFE HANDLING & OPERATION OF ELECTRIC CHAIN HOISTS

Electric chain hoists are an integral part of the entertainment industry, but can be very dangerous without proper training. This workshop addresses how to safely handle and operate electric chain hoists.

Participants will learn how to perform pre-operational checks, frequent inspections, adjust limits, and rig hoists for safe lifting and lowering operations.

SLINGS, SHACKLES AND TRUSS

Slings and shackles are still among the most versatile staples of the rigging hardware. In this workshop, we will discuss selection, inspection, handling, and application of that hardware for the safe rigging of truss systems.

Participants will learn how to build a variety of rigging assemblies, using synthetic and wire rope slings and make safe attachments to structures and truss.

RIGGING MATH 101

This workshop combines classroom and hands-on practical exercises to teach fundamental rigging math. This class uses the same standardized formulas, as those provided for the ETCP Rigging - Arena exam. The hands-on component has participants assemble a truss structure and apply the loads. Thereafter, students apply the formulas, after which they will turn on the load cells to compare their load estimations.

Rigging Math 101 addresses the following scenarios:

  • Uniform and point loads on simple supported spans, three-point spans, square, and circle configurations.
  • Cantilevered loads.
  • Bridles of equal and unequal height.

FALL PROTECTION AUTHORIZED USER

Falls remain the leading cause of worker fatalities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Learn how to protect yourself while working at height, and stay up to date on the most recent fall protection regulations, standards and equipment.

This training goes beyond online courses, utilizing practical applications and hands-on activities to demonstrate proper practices and ultimately keep you safe on the job.

  • Attendees are encouraged to bring their own fall protection equipment.
  • Attendees will also participate in structure climbing and a rescue scenario.
